the Greatest Generation should be us #in2010

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on 03.01.2010 by thomas

The Greatest  Generation is a term referring to the generation of people who fought World War II and afterwords rebuilt everything that was destroyed.

I was thinking about this.

Do I want to be called a member of the Greatest Generation? I do.

I can’t?

Because I haven’t fought a war?

Because I haven’t killed anyone?

Well…

They are the Greatest Generation. I acknowledge and honor all veterans who’ve fought. The women who stepped up and supported them. The children, the innocent ones lost. Whether they were wrong or right they died. Anyone and everyone. But I want us to be known as the Greatest Generation. How can we top reuniting and rebuilding a world after a war?

We can top that by uniting and building a world WITHOUT war.

That would make us the greatest generation. That would have people speaking(and tweeting?) of us as the ones who collectively decided that enough was enough. The tools for such communication were never in place. The wealth of common knowledge has never been more accessible. I’m not on some crazy biblical the light is gonna shine down and all will be granted heaven-ish. I’m saying “the people united will never be defeated”. That’s a protest slogan I’ve heard. It’s true but how could the people of the 60′s be truly united when they were small groups of people limited by physical mail and telephone for communication? That’s only 50 years ago. We’ve been “modern humans” for thousands of years. Now look what we’ve come into just in our lifetime(every single person who will read this).

These are not toys we’ve been given they are tools. Let’s use them.

Happy New Year

I said to my friends & fam I hope we all get JUICY

I say the same to you

PEACE for 20-10

the dreamers of the day are dangerous men…

“Those who dream by night, in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that all was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes, and make it possible.”

Music makes complete sense to me…

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , on 27.12.2009 by thomas

People are confusing. They aren’t honest. They don’t say exactly what they think. They lie. They fear. Music never lied to me. Music never confused me. Music is fearless. Music never left anything but satisfaction in my mind. Music isn’t afraid to speak up. Music doesn’t assume. It doesn’t talk back. It just asks you to listen. It doesn’t look at you and say “Hey – YOU can’t hear this”. You don’t have to respond. You don’t have to answer any questions to music. You don’t have to get it gifts. It won’t get mad at you. It’s there when you’re an asshole and it’s there when you are a champion. There is music from every culture in the recorded history of mankind. We can all appreciate music. Why can’t we all appreciate each other?

I’m on the bus… [thoughts in transit]

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on 21.12.2009 by thomas

Writing my 1st blog via iPhone. Halfway to Staten via L train to Manhattan and the X1 bus back through Brooklyn over the Verrazano. My first time going out since a nice little blizzard dropped almost a foot on the city. The night after the storm and the streets were clear, everything aligned in rows of snow at the steets sidelines. [Shoutout to the men and women in city sanitation and MTA people doing a good job. The higher ups give the crew a bad name.] The commuter-aisles bus riders have made through the icy barriers are the best. I’m in sneakers and I didn’t get my feet wet. Gotta know where to step. That spot might look like solid ground or it might be a sinkhole to a terrible fate, doomed by an icy wet foot. You don’t wanna be hoppin around on the dry one. I’m used to walking on thin ice.

Morning thoughts… Wednesday 12.16.09

In the film business there is what is known as Above-the-Line and Below-the-Line. It’s not a hush-hush quiet thing said under the breath, it’s a clear line that’s drawn. “This is for them, this is for you all”. It’s Like that. I’ve realized that most any lesson applies to everything if it’s  used in similar situations. What I’m getting at is – everyone below the line is fighting each other over scraps while everyone above-the-line is way out of range from the crossfire. Divide/Conquer. C.R.E.A.M. GET THE MONEY.

#30YearsOfWarinAfghanistan – Reload

Gen. Stanley McChrystal

U.S. military chief: ‘We cannot have an endless surge’ in Afghanistan

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has said his forces will take the security lead in five years, despite doubts among military analysts that the Afghan army and police will be able to provide a sufficient number of trained forces in that period.

McChrystal rejected concerns that the July 2011 withdrawal is too early.

OK so Karzai says 5 years. We say : 18 months. We’ve already been there at war officially for 8 years. I was reading that article and one of the commenters said

AndersonClay

“To watch the courageous Afghan freedom fighters battle modern arsenals with hand-held weapons is an inspiration to those who love freedom.”

President Reagan speaking about Afghans battling Russian “infidels.” @ yaleglobal.yale.edu

AndersonClay

… even AFTER Reagan, to watch the courageous Afghan freedom fighters battle modern arsenals with hand-held weapons IS STILL an inspiration to those who love freedom.
In the past Afghan FREDON fighters were funded by the US now they are funded by US and EU DRUG LORDS, the BIG importers of the HIGH YIELD Heroin produced in Afghanistan THANKS to American INVASION!
Are we HELPING anyone here? (Well except drug traffic?) We are just OPENING A BIG DEBT HOLE ON THE GROUND where you and I will ultimately lie at the end of this mess!
Couldn’t have said it better myself. I also read another article about the 5 Americans they arrested in Pakistan for terrorist activities and the lack of real information and use of really loaded ‘target’ words really make me think about what’s going on. I’ve never trusted the media, I never will.

The Lines are Drawn Clearly (Film Business 101)

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on 11.12.2009 by thomas

In the film business you have “above-the-line” and “below-the-line”. Above is the cast, directors (director of photography, maybe), producers. Below the line is everyone else : all of the other departments : Camera, Grip [Shooting - Rigging - Construction]  (which is what I am – a rigging grip) , Teamsters, Electricians, Wardrobe, Scenic Artists, Hair & Make-Up, Caterers, Craft Service, Set Dressers, Props, Parking, Production Assistants, Assistant Directors, Sound techs, Video techs. All of those departments are below the line.

If you don’t know what a call sheet is, basically every day we get like a mission plan and it’s two sheets of paper. Page one is the scenes we’re going to shoot that day with info like a short description, cast in scene, length in pages of scene, location. Also are notes for the different departments below this plan for the day.

An excerpt from tomorrow’s call sheet:

Special Requirements : **HEATING TENT FOR CAST**

…… word. it’s not said but – the message is – NOT FOR THE CREW. guess who picked up the heaters that aren’t for us to use…. we did! Guess whose responsibility it is to provide heaters? Not my department! Guess who was doing this as a last minute favor? We did. Guess who’s going to benefit? Everyone above the line. Guess who will get no thanks? We who are just the guys who stand around smoking cigarettes. We’ll get a wrap gift and a party but in reality you’re not a human being you’re a simply appeased and replaceable drone. There are lines drawn that are made very clear. It’s going to be 23 degrees and 20-30mph winds tomorrow night and we’ll be right on the east river. It took me 3 years outside working 4 seasons in #NYC  to really learn to dress for any weather. There is no quarter for the crew. I love my job. I love doing what I do. I enjoy the challenge and the benefits of working outside. But all of that is nothing when I’m constantly reminded of the lines that are drawn between people.
